In proportion to the increase of foreign tourists visiting Japan, the number of foreigners with interest of choosing share house as their home is growing.

Just when I was thinking that share houses with essence of Japanese culture might increase from now on, I heard that Come on Up Ltd. has newly opened a share house with tatami floor at Monzen-Nakamachi, so called “Monnaka”, a town where you can see and experience the old “Edo”.

Today, I will tell you all about “Come on UP Monzen nakacho”.

The share house is 6 minutes walk from Nakajima station of JR Keiyo line and 10 minutes walk from Monzen-Nakamachi of Touzai line. There are 2 lines available in a walking distance. It only takes 10 minutes to Ginza by train so you probably wouldn’t feel any inconveniency commuting. Plenty of Japanese pickles and sweets shops stands nearby. Fukagawa-meshi, a cooked rice with asari clam and green onion is popular around this area.

The sight from the station and Fukagawa Edo museum is scenic and plenty of shops are chosen as a location for shooting commercials of Tokyo Metro and gourmet shows. Some of you might be familiar with scenery of the town.

In the summer, there will be “Fukagawa Hachiman Festival, a.k.a. Mizukake Festival”, one of the best 3 festivals of Edo. Sumida river and Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, a town with stylish cafes continuously opening are very close. Living in the neighborhood full of interesting spots will enrich your life. It would be entertaining to introduce the neighbor to foreigners visiting Japan.

“Come on UP Monzen nakacho” stands at the town filled with old Edo atmosphere, with only 5 private rooms. If you are to live in a calm environment with small number of residents, this may be the perfect choice.

Coming home, you will feel the warmness from the traditional Japanese style of living. This may be the popular style of living. With expectation, let’s go into the house!

It’s no doubt that everyone wants to be relaxed and have a good time with those living together.

Chit-chatting at a big living room or chilling out at the terrace on a fine day.

Some may wish to live in a stylish house like the ones you see in TV shows. Has it ever cross your mind how wonderful it will be to live in a house with a cafe-like atmosphere, encountering a drama-like scene in daily life.

The share house I will introduce today are for those who wants to make a dream of living in the house you long for come true. It is called “FineMaison Inadazutsumi”, a unisex share house with 42 rooms in total.

About 100㎡ wide living room is designed according to a theme “Cafe in the woods”. It is divided into 4 areas, lounge, dining, bar, and cafe counter. Residents have a choice where and how to spend their day in the room.

Outside the house is a terrace surrounded by trees. There is even a exciting plan to make manga room in near future.

You can access without train transfer to Shinjuku station from Inadazutsumi station which is the nearest from the house.Share house is 7 minutes walk from Keio-Inadazutumi station of Keio-Sagamihara line. (Only a 4 minutes walk from Inadazutsumi station of JR Nambu line) For a daily shopping, there is a convenience store within a walking distance.

In front of the building is a broad parking space. No need to search for a nearby parking lot! Feel free to enjoy cycling or motorcycle riding on weekends.

By choosing a share house as your new residence, more or less, you are expecting to meet new people. Don’t you want to spend a great time with your new friends?

“FineMaison Inadazutsumi” can also keep your private space private by it’s structure. You don’t need to go through a living room to get to your private room. In addition, most of the rooms have washing basin and restroom equipped which enables you to feel more private compared to other share houses. The share space is big enough to find your best way to spend time according to your condition or purpose.

I assume that there will be variety of residents moving in. Like that there’s no border for a fine coffee and cuisines, you sure can get along with your share mates naturally by spending time in their own ways at the sharing living room.

Fine select Inc. runs this house.

Staff working in the firm is very ernest and trustworthy was the impression I got from the conversations we had. They focus and never compromise on creating a space that residents feel safe and comfortable. It runs over 100 share houses all over Tokyo which enables you to ask for an advise when moving to other district.

I recommend for those who even a little bit thought that “I might want to be a part of share house life, living with all sorts of people with different perspectives” to come and take a look. Once you see how fulfilling the facilities are, your heart may be filled with excitement imagining the life here.

Under a red roof is a cafe with a sense of warmth brought out by woods.

“Our life is exactly like the ones you see in TV Dramas”

At first, you were just one of the residents, sitting back, observing others’ life with a cup of coffee in hand. But when you know it, you are playing the leading part of your own story created in the house.

That kind of life may await you…

The best attraction of “Firsthouse Mizonokuchi 100+b” is that it is easy for new friends to make. It’s fun because not only Japanese but also friends from foreign countries can do it. I recommend it to those who think that “I want a new encounter.

Mr. Sugawara

While actually living, I am doing business of share house. I am listening to the opinions of residents or responding to small problems. While doing maintenance and cleaning of the share house, I am enjoying the feeling of the captain of a long ship as long as I am.

—I heard that this house was painted exterior wall recently.

Mr. Sugawara

This building is not a new construction but a renovation. For that reason, we want to carefully use while maintaining. The property owner arranged for this exterior wall painting. Moreover, it is finished with the sense of color of citrus system and green of interwhao corporate color since our foundation 20 years ago.

—There are many residents of foreigners, but is communication difficult?

Mr. Sugawara

I can communicate with the English speaking resident without problems. Communication with residents who can not speak Japanese as well as English is a little hard, but by speaking slowly and carefully, I understand in general.

—Do you participate in events between residents?

Kinshi-cho is the city with a view of “Skytree”, the relatively new symbol of Tokyo. You can see the landmark almost anywhere from the city, which makes you realize that you are in Tokyo.

A life in Kinshi-cho. With two train line, Tokyo metro Hanzomon line and JR line available, makes it easy to access the central part of Tokyo. There are plenty of shopping sites such as supermarket open till late in the evening, 24h open convenience stores, and even shopping malls. These shops and parks are located within 10 minutes walk from the station, enabling you to spend your weekend without leaving the city.

Even though you can live all by yourselves without any problems, it may be a feeling of loneliness which drives people to choose share houses.

A living room with someone warmly welcoming you home, and share mates greeting each other in the morning. The choices you can make either to chill out in your private room or having a blast with share mates. These are one of the positive aspects of living in a share house.

Today, let’s take a closer look at the “Couverture Kinshi-cho Ⅱ”, a share house located near Kinshi-cho station.

It is 7 minutes walk from Kinshi-cho station. From its’ fancy entrance, people may consider it as a hideaway cafe or hair salon at first sight. Pay attention to this massive amount of mail posts. The image of the popular Japanese share house reality show may have given you an idea of share house with residents up to 6.

Couverture Kinshi-cho Ⅱ, on the other hand, can accommodate residents up to 33. It is a large-scaled gender free share house.

You may not fully imagine what it is like to share a house with so many people. We hope to provide you enough details of the life here with plenty of photos of the house. Please take a look and build up a image of how the life will be like living here.

We live in an age where it’s easy to travel anywhere. I believe that this is because we do not have to jump over the same hurdles to get to other places in the world as we once did. People are now on the move. Living in a sharehouse, it’s possible to meet and encounter people regardless of district, region or country.

Many people have only had interaction with a restricted number of people in their hometown. Living in a sharehouse gives these people an opportunity to mingle with a variety of people from vastly different backgrounds and broadens one’s views of the world. However, although there are certainly people who understand the value of meeting different people, there are also those who are reluctant to live with people they don’t know.

The focus of this interview is on community within sharehouses. We will touch on concerns such as what kind of people are living in sharehouses, and what kind of communication takes place between housemates. We will visit Share Residence Kokubunji, a large-scale, 58-room sharehouse in the west of Tokyo.

At first glance the exterior leads us to believe it’s a regular apartment building, however inside is an extravagant sharehouse with a Scandinavian-influenced interior, complete with espresso machine and even an ice cream maker.

What kind of people live here, and what kind of lives are they living? Let’s find out!

Yes!

—Why did you choose to live in a sharehouse?

Eri

I came to Tokyo as a dancer, and thought that living in a sharehouse sounded fun after reading an interview quite like this one on a sharehouse portal site. Also the cheap rent had me sold. When I came to check the place out I found everyone cooking together in the kitchen and having a good time, and that appealed to me.

Kunihiro

I did study overseas for a year, but I always lived alone. When I came back I had no money and I was worrying about what to do, so I decided on a sharehouse because the furniture is supplied and the rent is cheap.

Taka

Before moving in here I was traveling around Japan, the Philippines and Taiwan so when I first came to Japan on a working holiday visa I didn’t have any friends at first and was quite lonely. I thought that a sharehouse would be a great place to make friends, and started looking at sharehouse portal sites, too.

○These three are all first-time sharehouse sharemates!

–Did you have any worries or concerns moving into a sharehouse for the first time?

Eri

None at all (laughs) Although I do remember thinking that it’d be scary if there were cliques inside the house.

Kunihiro

Actually I didn’t want to live in a sharehouse at first (laughs) I had always wanted to live by myself for the longest time… but I didn’t have that kind of money and ended up moving in here. I know it’s a sharehouse, but before moving in I kind of hoped that the relationship between sharemates would be more like the kind of relationship between residents of an apartment building.

Taka

I just thought the whole idea sounded fun.

Eri ・Kunihiro ・Taka

(laughter)

○Social interaction in the house is a main worry for new housemates

—How did you get to know the other housemates?

Kunihiro

Umm, I was just doing my own thing in the living room and it all happened quite naturally, I guess. If you’re in the living room someone will always come in and introduce themselves.

Eri

It’s kind of like school. You talk to the people you talk to, and maybe just exchange pleasantries with the people you don’t really talk to. Things go smoothly without having to worry about it too much.

○Everyone seems to be at ease with each other.

—What kind of expectations did you have at first? Is what you see on TV a big influence on your expectations?

Eri

I did go in thinking that it would be like on TV, but it’s actually quite different (laughs) I did think It’d be nice if there were more hot guys around!。

○More hot guys…

So live people

—Why did you all come to Tokyo?

Eri

After finishing dance school I worked in Nagasaki at Huis Ten Bosch before returning to Osaka. Dance work in Osaka is very limited, however, and upon hearing that Tokyo is the place to be for dancers seeking work I came to Tokyo to increase my personal connections to get work.

Kunihiro

I’m from Kagoshima, and came to Tokyo to attend university.

Taka

I’ve come from Australia on a working holiday.

○Everyone has their own reasons for coming to Tokyo

—How much does it cost to live in a sharehouse?

Kunihiro

When I was living alone I was spending 80,000 yen a month on rent, but here it’s only around 50,000. Although since living here my food expenses have increased because I want to cook all the time!

Eri

Yeah, I make takoyaki by myself, too. Kind of like if I start making it, someone will come to share! (laughs)

Kunihiro

Wow, all by yourself!? People who cook will cook, and people who don’t cook won’t at all.

○Rent may be cheap but food expenses can be unexpectedly high. On the contrary you could get someone to share with you every now and again.

—So everyone does their own thing outside the house, but do you ever show off any skills and talents to everyone in the house?

Kunihiro

Oh, Eri! You did that thing! The running man!

Eri

Hey now, that wasn’t like a performance or anything! People were doing it on TV and everyone was telling me to do it, so I did, that’s all/

Eri

Oh, but you are always speaking perfect English!

Kunihiro

No way, no I’m not!

Taka

I drew a picture for Keiko, one of the housemates. Wanna see it?

Eri

Wow, you’re so talented…

○Checking out Taka’s artwork

○The mural on the wall beside the pool is Taka’s creation. He was asked to paint something on the wall of another sharehouse.

—Are there ever any romantic encounters in the house?

Kunihiro

None at all, I don’t think?

Taka

None at the moment, at least.

Kunihiro

Yeah, but maybe someone might get together between summer and winter!

Eri

Ah, yes, the lonely season! But I don’t think it’s a good idea to get involved with anyone in the house! (laughs)

○This was the most exciting question of the interview

Friends are waiting to be made

—Any last words for our readers?

Kunihiro

I didn’t want to live in a sharehouse at first, but it’s so much fun now that I’m here!

Eri

Let’s make memories together!

Taka

Be friends !

All

That’s so like you!

○Living in a sharehouse in a few words↑

○The housemates have built an equal relationship despite being of different age and coming from different areas.

—During the interview these three were full of anecdotes and spoke so excitedly about their time in the house. Thank you!

This interview was made possible by the cooperation of housemates from Share Design’s Share Residence Kokubunji. By speaking with these housemates we have understood that living in a sharehouse isn’t exactly like how it is portrayed in the media.

However, more than anything else it’s plain to see that the relationship between sharemates here goes above any beyond that of being simple neighbors in an apartment. The sharemates here trust each other and have created bonds which can be seen through the comfortable, casual way they interact with each other in conversation.

Surely these housemates are laughing and having fun on a daily basis, making memories they can look back on fondly in the future.

Living in a sharehouse means that you will meet a variety of people of different ages and backgrounds who hold different beliefs, and by coming into contact with values that differ from your own you will no doubt enrich your own life.

Choosing to live in a sharehouse is a great deal when you consider the low costs, the opportunity to make friends, and also the chance to discover a whole new world in Tokyo.

Have your tale interwoven into the lives of others. Live in a sharehouse.

An urgent forum entitled “The future of sharehouses ~Proposal to use vacant houses~” was held on Saturday the 19th of October, 2013 sponsored by the Japan Sharehouse Association with support from Jutaku Shinpo.

The event was based around the standards issued by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in regards to specific government agencies on the 6th of September, 2013 and concerned the direction which would be taken by the association as well as the industry, with attendance by many people including those involved in sharehouse management, construction and real estate.

This is the first time we have attended such a large event with everyone in the industry in one building and it was an extremely valuable experience thinking about and discussing the future of sharehouses with those in the industry.

On the day of the event guests were greeted by a lecture from Mr. Atsushi Miura, a man knowledgeable about social structure and the realities of young men and women’s lives (whose literary works include “Lower-class society” and “Let’s talk of ‘market share’ for Japan in the future”) and panel discussions were held by professionals in the industry regarding sharehouses increasing social significance in a diverse way. Also, our own CEO Mr. Moriyama received the opportunity to hold his panel on “The current state of the sharehouse market and its future prospects”, and there was also a discussion and exchange of opinions by experts in well-informed positions outside of the association, industry and media circles.

Please read on as I will now detail what happened at the event in this report.

The event was held in Shinjuku, Tokyo at a venue called Bellesalle Nishi-Shinjuku. I think you can get a feel for the size and scope of the event just by looking at this photo.

Before the beginning of the event. Association officials work together to finish the preparations. Another event, a quality sharehouse exhibition entitled “A new type of family with friends living together” was being held at the same time in another place.

Many people turned up to participate in the event, with 170 people in a venue seating 150. The degree of interest from the community and industry was evident. The event began with opening words from Mr. Hisao Yamamoto, representative of the Japan Sharehouse Association’s board of directors.

Mr. Yamamoto spoke about the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s
Buildings Standard Act’s ‘Boarding House’ standard expressing his shock the day the directive was released and the need for everyone in the industry to come together to make an appeal to the administration about the charm of sharehouse culture, the contributions they make to society and their necessity in this day and age.

He proposed to the crowd what kind of efforts will become necessary for those in the industry to take as well as which direction the association will work towards in regards to the tightened regulations.

Should there be deaths in a house due to fire, there is a possibility that businesses abiding by the rules, as well as those that don’t targeting low income earners, will both be made to operate equipment that increase costs and require administrative guidance and these costs will impact the tenants in the form of rent increases. For this reason, without relying on the government a system under the leadership of the association is necessary to develop sharehouses as safe rental properties in compliance with these laws.

Mr. Yamamoto’s address was followed by the guest speakers, and a positive message supporting the sharehouse industry from Kazuaki Miaji, of the Liberal Democratic Party, a member of the House of Representatives in the Diet, in that he expects to contribute towards the use of vacant houses in the revitalization of local areas.

Following this were words from Mr. Hirofumi Uchiyama, chairman of Housing Renovation Promotion Council, saying that renovation is indispensable in creating a livable environment for many people in a pre-existing building and to enhance its functionality and that there is a close relationship between renovation and sharehouses. His company may very well be headed in the same direction as the Japan Sharehouse Association under the principle of creating safe and comfortable houses catering to a diverse range of needs.

A special lecture was then held by Mr. Atsushi Miura, a man with many published literary works including “Lower-class society” and “Let’s talk of ‘market share’ for Japan in the future”, who says the share house industry and share-socialization movement is gaining attention.

In Mr. Miura’s opinion, Japanese society is becoming a ‘super-ageing society’, one of ‘socializing alone’, ‘employment fluidization’ and ‘restricted employment status’ (raising children and/or nursing a loved one while working at the same time) and because of this tight communities like those found in sharehouses are becoming increasingly important, not just for young men and women but also the older generations with new houses being developed for multi-generational tenants to live and learn from each other. This is a good thing, he says.

What surprised me the most about his speech was when he said that come the year 2055, most of the population will be 81 years of age. This may be 40 years in the future, however there is a necessity to confront the problems our society is facing, have a plan under which the whole society can unite and not just adhere with the existing framework. I also felt that with share houses playing a very important role supporting the future of Japanese society as places communication is created, it would be a shame for these new, unnecessary regulations to obstruct the growth of share houses.

After Mr. Miura’s lecture our own Mr. Moriyama started his presentation, themed “The current state of the sharehouse market and its future prospects”, talking about the state of affairs at Tokyo Sharehouse and its influence, as well as the future of the sharehouse industry.

There are a lot of people in sharehouse management who really make an effort to provide a safe and comfortable lifestyle for tenants, and we write our articles by visiting the properties listed on our site and taking photos ourselves. Many people find sharehouses appealing because of all the extra value they don’t get in a conventional rental property, and sound growth of the industry is necessary.

We began listing houses in metropolitan Tokyo and are now experiencing an increase in traffic from not just Japan but overseas as well, and have been able to create a new objective of introducing this shared lifestyle not just country-wide, but world-wide as well.

Mr. Yamamoto spoke after Mr. Moriyama’s presentation and explained the next steps concerning the establishment of the Cohabitation Housing Law (or ‘the sharehouse law’ as it is more widely known), stating that the cooperation of the people in the industry, as well as those in other fields, is essential.

He was followed by Mr. Takahashi, qualified architect and the Japan Sharehouse Association’s Head of Compliance, who aims to formulate a set of rules for the sharehouse industry and talked about the association’s voluntary standards.

He explained that due to the fact that there are all sorts of properties calling themselves sharehouses, as an association they will inspect and make a judgement on properties stressing importance on ‘Building Safety and Comfortability’ (including location, maintenance, blueprints, confirmation certificate, fire safety certificate to name a few) and ‘Circumstances of Management Operation.’

The event ended with a 5-man panel discussion on the topic “The Vacant House Problem” as well as “What’s Next for Sharehouses”, including media representative Nobuhiro Honda (editor-in-chief of Jutaku Shinpo), Yuki Shimizu who works in sharehouse management (head of Team Sukima Japan) and Yasuko Nagase (representative director of Come On UP) with Tokyo Sharehouse’s Mr. Moriyama as moderator.

Mr. Honda stated that, “Up until now housing complexes haven’t really demonstrated the meaning of living together. The divide between parent and child and the young and old grows deeper, and the potential to solve this problem lies in sharehouses,” and proposes that making use of vacant housing is something we should petition for from now on.

From a management standpoint, Mr. Nagase and Ms. Shimizu strongly assert that “Managing a share house isn’t a tough business. The most important thing is the precious community it creates. We don’t want these new regulations to ruin the chance to fix problems like dying alone due to the rise of the nuclear family by making it harder to create such a community” and mention that they will continue to develop and promote the shared living lifestyle they have come to know by managing a sharehouse.

There was then a question and answer session and questions flew around the room from those involved with sharehouses about the insecurity of the industry following the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism directive, initiatives and course of action of the association and its voluntary standards, as well as a discussion with the representative of the board of directors, Mr. Yamamoto.

There is a difference of opinions depending on standing. However, I think today was the start of a group movement with everyone involved invested to take opportunities and increase the possibilities of shared living and the development of share houses.

Sharehouse culture has taken root, improving and developing to bring us a future in which our everyday lives become that little bit more enriching, and this urgent forum came to an end today leaving us with these expectations.

In a shared house, it goes without saying that you should try not to disturb the other residents. After all, you are living together!

This can be achieved by cleaning up public areas after use, sorting out your garbage for recycling, and keeping noise to minimum. Try to think, “Would I like it if the other residents didn’t do this?”

When renting a property by yourself, it is possible to freely invite family, friends and partners over. At shared houses, however, you may be required to get permission before inviting others to your room or even allocated days and times when it is permissible to do so.

On weekends or your days off, you might want to have some fun, “me” time. But what about the other resident who works a night shift in a service industry? You may unintentionallydisturb that person’s sleep…On the other hand it may be possible to set rules among stresidents to cater for each other’s particular circumstances. Why not be flexible enough totalk with other residents about in-house rules and rules between residents?

Since there are both men and women living under the same roof, you may find residents falling for others in the shared house. It is probably natural for love to blossom in the house, but you still need to consider other resident’s feelings . It would be no fun living in a shared house if this has been banned due to other couples in the past having annoyed residents inthe house with their behaviour.

Take responsibility for your own valuables! You might find yourself in unnecessary trouble with another resident if you carelessly leave your wallet in a public area. It would be a realshame to form bad relations with other residents as a result of this kind of incident. Try tohave respect for others and get along with them…

You may think these rules a pain, but by living together, mindful of each other’s values and life styles, living in a shared house will give you a great opportunity to sample a lifestyle youwouldn’t experience living by yourself.

You may even develop a little yourself thinking about why these rules are necessary or how it is possible to create some new rules in order to make shared house life more fun.
