In recent years Tama Plaza has been in the spotlight as being a hot date location. The large scale shopping mall was constructed as part of the train station redevelopment, and is home to many stylish cafes and restaurants. Walk away from the station and you will find the quiet, tree-lined streets of the residential area. This particular area was modeled after the garden suburbs in London, its large residences and open spaces working in harmony to create a townscape that wouldn’t be out of place in a Hollywood movie.

The location has great public transport access and Shibuya can be reached in 20 minutes without changing trains on the Denentoshi line. The building itself was formerly a newspaper company on the 1F with a company dormitory above. It has now been renovated into 65-room large scale sharehouse, and the look of the intentionally rough interior is very different from its exterior. At first glance it seems like the kind of house that would appeal to men, but upon closer inspection one finds its European touches and floral arrangements to create a unique elegance.

What’s more, the house is filled with all kinds of ‘toys’ and facilities for the mature adult to play with. Residents of this house discover a belonging here and thrive in the excitement it offers.

If you want to know what I’m talking about, read on!

The brains behind this project, Share Design, specialise in large scale sharehouses and interior design. Each one of their houses is unique in concept and design. Share Residence Tama Plaza is dedicated to fun, a concept which is incorporated throughout the house and it’s design. The idea is for communication to grow through residents having fun and enjoying themselves in the house.

The staff at this company all have skills in different areas. With a former pilot, musician and jazz dancer on board, you may be lucky enough to sit in on a lecture on these topics and more using the facilities in the house.

Teach others what you know, and learn from them what you don’t. With this kind of reciprocal environment in the house, everyday is bound to be full of exciting times. Would you fit in here?

We live in a bustling, ever-changing era. The spread of the internet has greatly changed the way we live our lives and run our businesses, and our concept of time has altered.

Nevertheless, it is because we are within this whirlpool of intense change that we are attracted to the constant. We see this inside ourselves, swayed not by the times and current fashions, being made to think about universality and reaffirm who we are.

In this article we will look at D Share Jiyugaoka, a renovated sharehouse in an approximately 50-year old vintage building that has stands in Okusawa, Setagaya-ku.

Although it’s edgy decor gives the impression of a cool, male-oriented space, this is actually a female-exclusive sharehouse with an interior to be appreciated by any design enthusiast.

Let’s move on and have a look inside the house!

A place where one can bask in the sunlight, breath deeply and relax.

Imagine that pure-like ambiance between midnight and early morning when there aren’t too many people out and about. Imagine going camping on the outskirts of town and welcoming the new day with nature all around you. You can get a nice, fresh start to the day by yawning loudly and stretching your arms up to the sky above, naturally releasing the stress built up throughout the week in your body you didn’t even know that you had.

If you want to experience mornings like these in your everyday life, however, both where you live and the environment within are very important. So, we introduce to you today Wabisabi House off Jiyugaoka, a newly constructed sharehouse by Designer’s House located in a residential area surrounded by lush nature despite being in the middle of the city.

The house is located in Setagaya’s Fukusawa. Fukusawa is known as a quiet, lush high-class residential area said to be home to the houses of many famous Japanese celebrities. Wabisabi House has been designed for easy navigation and is surrounded by nature with cherry blossom trees growing near the entrance and a natural lawn maintained around the house. The interior uses undressed concrete as a base, smartly combined with wooden floorboards and matched with the kind of furniture that makes you feel like you’re outdoors.

It is most certainly a rare address in which one can experience all that nature has to offer right in the middle of the city.

Let’s get on with it and have a look inside this house in lush Fukusawa!!

Looking after this sharehouse is the company Wabisabi House. The staff member in charge of the property has backpacked around the world and has experience living in a sharehouse overseas. Because of this, they are able to manage from a tenant’s point of view and with events held periodically they are not just concerned with providing a comfortable environment to live in but in creating a close-knit community also.

The percentage of non-Japanese tenants in this company’s sharehouses is comparatively high, great for those wanting to live together with people from all over the world.

This particular house has been newly constructed, finally reaching completion after one year from the planning stage and through a lot of trial and error. They also have general, non-sharehouse rooms for rent, where you can enjoy mingling with everyone else in the building while relaxing on the wide, open terrace. The owner also owns the apartment next door, and opportunities for meeting new people abound beyond those sharing the same house with you.

If you are living a busy, fast-paced lifestyle, you definitely need to check out this laidback atmosphere within the city where time seems slows down.

Everyone should experience hardships while they are young

For today’s interview we had the pleasure of speaking with this gentleman about topics other than just the share house industry. Starting off talking about the share properties he currently manages, we moved onto his personal history and a frank discussion about life itself. Mr. Ohara experienced much hardship during his formative years and because of this empathizes with today’s youth, saying that the past experiences he felt were pointless at the time actually helped him become who he is today.

We sat down to talk to Mr. Ohara about the future of the share house industry, his own visions, and the possibility of share houses helping to solve Japan’s social problems with the country in a state of impending crisis.

In this interview we delve into the thoughts of Mr. Ohara, who, in his position as manager and with his extensive experience, delivers word after word of invaluable importance.

Being consistent in creating places he would want to live himself

Classicompany currently manages over 10 different share house properties within the city. When inquiring as to what was the company’s concept, Mr. Ohara replied that there wasn’t any in particular. However, behind those words lay a consistent, most fundamental answer unlike those easily thrown around in advertisement and publicity. That is, providing a place for others that he would want to live in himself. We spoke to Mr. Ohara about this ideal.

—Where did this idea of creating places you yourself would want live in sprout from?

Mr. Ohara

I originally began in the share house industry around 5 years ago, and being asked to create a place for a foreign friend living in Japan was where it started. I also lived in a share house at that time, too. By living with a large group of people myself I came to understand clearly just what was necessary and what was lacking in such an environment. I thought about how I would go about creating a share house, and it occurred to me that that’s exactly what I should do.

Oh, I have had so much experience it’s impossible to talk about it all, and I mean that in both a good and bad way. Growing up my family owned its own business and I was surrounded by businessmen so from a young age all I thought about was making money myself. I was already an expert at counting money when I was in elementary school (laughs). I did some work in Nagoya when I was younger and there were times when I was pulling in a ridiculous amount of cash. But of course, money attracts scammers and I was cheated out a lot of it.

—Oh, really? You don’t seem like the kind of person who could be deceived very easily.

Mr. Ohara

I was very young and I guess the good guys always get cheated, huh (laughs). I was even deceived by close friends I trusted, too. I hit rock bottom and didn’t know where I was going or what I should do.

—You could develop a serious distrust of others experiencing something like that.

Mr. Ohara

Yeah, that time in my life was really hard for me. Even so, seeing as I’ve come so far I look back on it as a good experience. Of course it would never happen now and I would never want to experience it again at my age, but I think everyone should experience some hardship when they are young. I don’t intend to force anyone to put themselves in such a position, but you really grow as a person and will look back on the time you spent fondly later on in life.

The decision to live in a share house can change who you are as a person

—Getting back on topic, what do you think is the main appeal of living in a share house?

Mr. Ohara

I think the most common answer is being able to meet a lot people with different values, but I think that from a businessman’s point of view, it’s the process of creating a house that’s really enjoyable. I may be dressed normally now but when I’m on the job I’m almost always in my work gear. I do a lot of the interior work myself, like wallpapering and putting up door frames.

—Wow, even the head of the company himself works on site!

Mr. Ohara

Yeah, I don’t think many people do (laughs). Unlike regular rental properties, one of the features of a share house is the communal space tenants can interact in and I can implement my own ideas as I see fit. One of my houses was actually inspired by a café I walked into by chance. I get a real kick out of turning my ideas into reality and I hope the tenants enjoy it, too.

—I think tenants would be really glad to know that you guys are enjoying yourselves while planning and managing the share houses. Tell me, what is the secret to enjoying a shared living lifestyle in a share house?

Mr. Ohara

I think that would depend on the house and the kind of people living there, however there is one thing I want you to bear in mind – greeting others. There are surprisingly a lot of people who don’t greet others properly despite it being a part of basic conduct. I’m sure there are people who aren’t very good at talking to other people, but just by exchanging greetings another’s impression of you changes considerably. Exchange greetings properly and you will never be disliked by others. You’re probably wondering what I’m going on about, but to build good relationships with others you need to use your greetings.

—So you’re saying that common courtesy is most important when interacting with others no matter where you go, right. I have many more questions to ask you but to end things tell us about what’s next for you?

Mr. Ohara

We’re not just renting out rooms to live in, we’re working in an industry where having heart and soul is important so the thought of contributing to society is always in my mind. I wouldn’t do this job if I was just in it for the money. I really think that Japan is in a terrible state. We have a society with a steadily increasing ageing population, and with this problem only becoming more severe, share houses are places where people can live comfortably without feeling lonely. I want to make share houses a part of the future. One interesting idea might be to hold events for finding suitable marriage partners. I also want rearrange the structure of the company itself. Particularly, creating a daycare centre within the office to provide an environment for women to continue working even after they have given birth to their children.
To put it simply, I want to develop and popularize an industry that could be the beginning to solving the problems Japan is faced with. That is my current objective.

Mr. Ono graciously spoke to us for over an hour during the interview (including off-the-record topics) and while there are a lot of things I would love to relay to our readers, Mr. Ono makes appearances at events held periodically at the house (they previously held a BBQ in a location looking out at Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Bay) so if you ever have the chance I recommend you speak to him in person.

Sangen Jaya often appears on ‘Places People Want to Live’ rankings. I am from the countryside so I wasn’t very familiar with the area, however walking into random bars and the like and asking the owners about things to do and places to go in Tokyo, the name ‘Sangen Jaya’ came up a lot.

One of the appeals of Sangen Jaya is easy access. If you take the Tokyu Den-en-toshi line it is two stations from Shibuya by local train, or only one station if you take the express and the last train is at 00:42 so even if you stay out late with your friends in Shibuya there is a sense of reassurance that you can catch the train home.

Furthermore, the area around the train station is lined with shops and commercial facilities so it is quite livable which is another appeal. The interesting thing is, however, that the biggest appeal of this neighborhood is the shopping district crowded with a variety of different shops and bars along the streets. It is a chaotic atmosphere of the residential area and entertainment district rolled into one, however that in turn has a marked impact on the rows and rows of shops and fascinates those who keep coming back.

This time we are introducing share house Classico Sangen Jaya, a 3-storey building located in a quiet residential area 12 minutes walk from Sangen Jaya station on the Tokyu Den-en-toshi line. A small Japanese garden decorates the entrance and a roofed garage creates free space.

The interior has been renovated like new from a family home into a gorgeous space in line with the owner’s desire of ‘building a place he would want to live in himself’. Constructed from earthquake-resistant reinforced concrete, the quality and arrangement of the living room completes an interior with a high-class ambiance.

Let’s have a look inside the house.

Aimlessly walk down a tree-lined avenue with warm sunlight filtering through the leaves.

Slipping through the green, leafy quiet neighborhood you are soon met with a scene of stylish general stores and cafe’s lined up along the street. This is Jiyugaoka, the next town over.

Jiyugaoka is a town frequently ranked high in the ‘Town I Most Want To Live In’ questionnaires published by various magazines, and many stores and shops are spread out from the station at the center in this refined townscape.

Today we are introducing Tonarino Jiyugaoka, a share house 3-minutes walk from Midori-no-oka station on the Tokyu Oimachi line, which is just one stop from Jiyugaoka by train. ‘Midori-no-oka’ means ‘green hill’ in Japanese, and true to its name the area is a gently rising slope abundant with greenery; a nice, quiet place to live.

The house’s relaxed interior has been designed to fit with this quiet neighborhood, and is a great, warm place to come home to and unwind.

Let’s have a look inside the house!

Even now this town is known for the many cultural influences that originated here in years past. Looking back, there have been many accounts of famous actors and musicians with humble beginnings on the streets of Shimokitazawa.

Naturally drawn here, inspired by the possibility of dreams fulfilled, the people who gather here make Shimokitazawa a place known for its lively atmosphere. And only a seven minute walk away from the train station, you’ll find today’s share house—L’atelier 113 Shimokitazawa. The living room, with its high ceiling, is the perfect place to relax, and the loft placed up above adds a certain charm you can’t find anywhere else.

As I show you around the house you can see for yourself, so let’s have a look.

Come on UP, the managers of this share house, run over 20 share houses in the metropolitan area. Staying on familiar terms with the residents in all of their share houses, their management style leaves a great deal of responsibility in the hands of the residents. The residents of every house stick together, sharing knowledge and life experiences to foster a strong community.

Of course, no matter how liberal the management seems to be, the presence of Come on UP staff members is always felt within the house. While some may fear that such freedom can hinder relations with other residents, the management here at Come on UP is very supportive, casting away any fears or doubts one might have of trying one of their share houses.

For those seeking an easygoing house founded on friendship and comradery, look no further.

This time I’ll be showing you the women’s share house “Cosmos Setagaya”, a 3 minute walk from Setagaya Station.

The location is roughly 6 minutes away from Sangenjaya, swaying about on the Tokyu Setagaya Line’s streetcar. The train moves along at a leisurely pace, as the scenery viewed from the window slowly drifts by little by little, matching the train’s pace. In those few minutes riding the train, I felt a vague sense of serenity, making my way to the station.

If you’re using a bike, you can reach Setagaya from Sangenjaya, or even from Shibuya, but when you go to visit I highly recommend trying the street car.

As for the house, its surroundings have the atmosphere of a quiet residential house, with plenty of greenery. The neighborhood also gives the impression that you can spend a leisurely time here. This could be a good house for those who need a break from frantic living, looking for a place to live at one’s own pace. When speaking of Setagaya, a lot of people think of an upscale residential area, but personally I think rather than gaiety or luxuriousness, the town has a sense of nostalgia.

So without further ado, let’s take a look Cosmos Setaga, where you can relax in a calm and quiet environment.

Cosmo Interplan, which owns Cosmos Setagaya, owns and manages several other share houses, creating places for communities to thrive while ensuring the privacy of their residents. When talking with the manager, I was truly moved by their fastidiousness regarding everything including storage, spaciousness, cleanliness, and their dedication to ensuring the comfort of residents. I think it’s very fortunate when one can value their privacy while living in a share house.

Also, it seems there’s a car available for residents, which should be very useful when residents want to take a long trip together. Nowadays it’s hard to live in the city and have your own car, but being able to at least share one is a perk you’d never expect living on your own. When planning a vacation somewhere, if you have a car the possibilities are endless.

From a realistic perspective, based on practical living with ample facilities, storage, and quality space, there are sure to be a lot of people interested in a share house like this.

For those who feel a share house life could be fun, able to ensure one’s privacy while slowly fostering relations with others, be sure to check out this house.

The women’s share house “Platz Setagaya” managed by Style & Deco Co. Ltd., which is expanding its business focusing on renovation coordination as EcoDeco, aims to offer a share house chosen based on one’s hobbies or lifestyle. Although it is a small share house with 6 rooms in total, the spacious living room and dining room are stylish, and quite honestly extravagant. Complete with an all electronic kitchen and table ware, those who enjoy cooking or simply have interest in a share house around Setagaya, be sure to have a look.

CEILING

Off course, we recommend this share house for its spacious living room and dining room, but what creates the sense of space here is the high ceiling, as well as the boards that have been affixed in space intervals along with overhead lightings. The brightly lit overhead space creates a much more cheerful and sense of openness than usual for an enjoyable shared space.

ROOM

The rooms are also not all of the same type. Take room 204 here for example. It has great storage space and plenty of sunlight from the window, with the flooring and white walls creating a clean and uniform look. Furthermore, the furnishing on the right side of the chair is a fold-down bed from the wall, making optimization of space one of its charms.

While many believe recent share houses are very stylish, you’d be surprised to know Platz Setagaya was established over 5 years ago in April of 2006. Even now, Platz Setagaya has the impression of a share house on the forefront current trends where you can live comfortably. To that end, the manager created this share house from the perspective of one of its residents, and we felt the designers fastidiousness and thought was incorporated into its layout.

We asked the manager “What would you say is the best feature of Platz Segata?” and she answered us saying that “all of the residents are genuinely good people.” We didn’t actually get to speak with any of the residents, but when speaking with the female staff we got the impression that they have a lot of fun while managing the share house. It’s safe to say that in addition to the comfortable living space, all of the residents spend time together in an easy going atmosphere.

At the very least, those who are interested in staying at a women’s only designer share house around Setagaya, why not try paying Platz Setagaya a visit? We’re sure a comfortable life is waiting here for you.
