Brooklyn is the most fashionable and cutting-edge district in New York City. The city has historical buildings, and since it was originally an industrial area, there are many warehouses and old brick buildings, giving it an atmosphere that values the “good old days. As if to incorporate this atmosphere, Brooklyn style can now be seen in cafes and restaurants in Japan as well.

The share house we’d like to introduce to you this time looks as if it were inspired by the streets of Brooklyn. The large shared space that can only be found in a large scale share house with 34 households condensed into a single space is sure to surprise you. In addition to the ample shared space, each room is fully furnished and equipped with electronic locks, so you can move in right away and enjoy the security of this share house.

The property is located along the Keio Inokashira Line, a 3-minute walk from Mitakadai Station, 2 stations away from Kichijoji Station. There are no large supermarkets around Mitakadai Station, so you may not be able to go shopping or procure daily necessities nearby. After shopping at Kugayama Station, you may want to transfer to another station. So, you may be able to enjoy a lifestyle like this.

But you still need to take a look inside to decide whether or not you want to live in this house. First, let’s take a look at the living room, which is the pride of the house.

Faine Maison Mitakadai” is managed by FINE SELECT Co. Fine Select manages more than 80 women’s share houses mainly in the Tokyo area, and this is the first time they’ve opened a large property where men can also move in. Because this is a share house where several people live together, the share house has been designed to provide security so that residents can use it with peace of mind, making it easy for even those who have “never lived in a share house before. It’s a great place for those who have never lived in a share house before to start living in a share house.

It’s only one train ride to Shibuya, and it takes about 20 minutes. It takes about 20 minutes. For those who commute to Tokyo for work, the distance is within a typical commuting time, so it shouldn’t be that painful. On weekends and holidays, you can take a 15-minute walk toward Kichijoji to Inokashira Onshi Park to get in touch with nature and detoxify your daily stress. In particular, there are many stylish hidden cafes between the park and Kichijoji that are visited by celebrities, and it would be fun to spend some time exploring them.

Fine Maison Mitakadai is a great new property for those who are moving to Tokyo or looking for a new place to live this spring. The large size is very popular, so it may fill up quickly if you don’t hurry. It might be a good idea to choose a share house for your new life.

I believe that this is because we do not have to jump over the same hurdles to get to other places in the world as we once did. People are now on the move. Living in a sharehouse, it’s possible to meet and encounter people regardless of district, region or country.

Many people have only had interaction with a restricted number of people in their hometown. Living in a sharehouse gives these people an opportunity to mingle with a variety of people from vastly different backgrounds and broadens one’s views of the world. However, although there are certainly people who understand the value of meeting different people, there are also those who are reluctant to live with people they don’t know.

The focus of this interview is on community within sharehouses. We will touch on concerns such as what kind of people are living in sharehouses, and what kind of communication takes place between housemates. We will visit Share Residence Kokubunji, a large-scale, 58-room sharehouse in the west of Tokyo.

At first glance the exterior leads us to believe it’s a regular apartment building, however inside is an extravagant sharehouse with a Scandinavian-influenced interior, complete with espresso machine and even an ice cream maker.

What kind of people live here, and what kind of lives are they living? Let’s find out!

—Why did you choose to live in a sharehouse?

Eri

I came to Tokyo as a dancer, and thought that living in a sharehouse sounded fun after reading an interview quite like this one on a sharehouse portal site. Also the cheap rent had me sold. When I came to check the place out I found everyone cooking together in the kitchen and having a good time, and that appealed to me.

Kunihiro

I did study overseas for a year, but I always lived alone. When I came back I had no money and I was worrying about what to do, so I decided on a sharehouse because the furniture is supplied and the rent is cheap.

Taka

Before moving in here I was traveling around Japan, the Philippines and Taiwan so when I first came to Japan on a working holiday visa I didn’t have any friends at first and was quite lonely. I thought that a sharehouse would be a great place to make friends, and started looking at sharehouse portal sites, too.

○These three are all first-time sharehouse sharemates!

–Did you have any worries or concerns moving into a sharehouse for the first time?

Eri

None at all (laughs) Although I do remember thinking that it’d be scary if there were cliques inside the house.

Kunihiro

Actually I didn’t want to live in a sharehouse at first (laughs) I had always wanted to live by myself for the longest time… but I didn’t have that kind of money and ended up moving in here. I know it’s a sharehouse, but before moving in I kind of hoped that the relationship between sharemates would be more like the kind of relationship between residents of an apartment building.

Taka

I just thought the whole idea sounded fun.

Eri ・Kunihiro ・Taka

(laughter)

○Social interaction in the house is a main worry for new housemates

—How did you get to know the other housemates?

Kunihiro

Umm, I was just doing my own thing in the living room and it all happened quite naturally, I guess. If you’re in the living room someone will always come in and introduce themselves.

Eri

It’s kind of like school. You talk to the people you talk to, and maybe just exchange pleasantries with the people you don’t really talk to. Things go smoothly without having to worry about it too much.

○Everyone seems to be at ease with each other.

—What kind of expectations did you have at first? Is what you see on TV a big influence on your expectations?

Eri

I did go in thinking that it would be like on TV, but it’s actually quite different (laughs) I did think It’d be nice if there were more hot guys around!。

○More hot guys…

So live people

—Why did you all come to Tokyo?

Eri

After finishing dance school I worked in Nagasaki at Huis Ten Bosch before returning to Osaka. Dance work in Osaka is very limited, however, and upon hearing that Tokyo is the place to be for dancers seeking work I came to Tokyo to increase my personal connections to get work.

Kunihiro

I’m from Kagoshima, and came to Tokyo to attend university.

Taka

I’ve come from Australia on a working holiday.

○Everyone has their own reasons for coming to Tokyo

—How much does it cost to live in a sharehouse?

Kunihiro

When I was living alone I was spending 80,000 yen a month on rent, but here it’s only around 50,000. Although since living here my food expenses have increased because I want to cook all the time!

Eri

Yeah, I make takoyaki by myself, too. Kind of like if I start making it, someone will come to share! (laughs)

Kunihiro

Wow, all by yourself!? People who cook will cook, and people who don’t cook won’t at all.

○Rent may be cheap but food expenses can be unexpectedly high. On the contrary you could get someone to share with you every now and again.

—So everyone does their own thing outside the house, but do you ever show off any skills and talents to everyone in the house?

Kunihiro

Oh, Eri! You did that thing! The running man!

Eri

Hey now, that wasn’t like a performance or anything! People were doing it on TV and everyone was telling me to do it, so I did, that’s all/

Eri

Oh, but you are always speaking perfect English!

Kunihiro

No way, no I’m not!

Taka

I drew a picture for Keiko, one of the housemates. Wanna see it?

Eri

Wow, you’re so talented…

○Checking out Taka’s artwork

○The mural on the wall beside the pool is Taka’s creation. He was asked to paint something on the wall of another sharehouse.

—Are there ever any romantic encounters in the house?

Kunihiro

None at all, I don’t think?

Taka

None at the moment, at least.

Kunihiro

Yeah, but maybe someone might get together between summer and winter!

Eri

Ah, yes, the lonely season! But I don’t think it’s a good idea to get involved with anyone in the house! (laughs)

○This was the most exciting question of the interview

Friends are waiting to be made

—Any last words for our readers?

Kunihiro

I didn’t want to live in a sharehouse at first, but it’s so much fun now that I’m here!

Eri

Let’s make memories together!

Taka

Be friends !

All

That’s so like you!

○Living in a sharehouse in a few words↑

○The housemates have built an equal relationship despite being of different age and coming from different areas.

—During the interview these three were full of anecdotes and spoke so excitedly about their time in the house. Thank you!

This interview was made possible by the cooperation of housemates from Share Design’s Share Residence Kokubunji. By speaking with these housemates we have understood that living in a sharehouse isn’t exactly like how it is portrayed in the media.

However, more than anything else it’s plain to see that the relationship between sharemates here goes above any beyond that of being simple neighbors in an apartment. The sharemates here trust each other and have created bonds which can be seen through the comfortable, casual way they interact with each other in conversation.

Surely these housemates are laughing and having fun on a daily basis, making memories they can look back on fondly in the future.

Living in a sharehouse means that you will meet a variety of people of different ages and backgrounds who hold different beliefs, and by coming into contact with values that differ from your own you will no doubt enrich your own life.

Choosing to live in a sharehouse is a great deal when you consider the low costs, the opportunity to make friends, and also the chance to discover a whole new world in Tokyo.

Have your tale interwoven into the lives of others. Live in a sharehouse.

Kokubunji were Buddhist temples established during the Nara period by the order of Emperor Shomu 1300 years ago. At the time they were the biggest temples in existence and as such the land was considered holy, the area holding a lot of cultural heritage. The temple itself was burned down during the Kamakura period, however the historic remains stand solemnly even today.

Share Residence Kokubunji is inspiring a new culture in this historic neighborhood. At first glance its European interior might seem at odds with the Buddhist temple history of the area, however the fact that it blends this new culture with the existing to create a new history is very fitting for this already cultural town.

Inside the house is a colorful interior, large fireplace and even a coffee machine and ice cream maker. Such great facilities are only possible because this is a large residence able to house 58 residents. The place is full of things you could only dream of having living alone in a small apartment.

Let’s move on and have a look inside!

How does a Northern European-style life in the middle of a cultural Japanese town sound to you? Managing this house is ShareDesign, a company that has been in the sharehouse game for a while. They design houses like a work of art, always concentrating on one concept and recreate it through every inch of the property.

The flooring is one example of how extraordinary things have been created in even the smallest places, yet are a part of daily life and become familiar over time, or so I imagine.

Cafe-lovers, music-lovers, ice cream lovers – Share Residence Kokubunji has something for everyone. The great thing about share houses is coming together and meeting like-minded friends, stimulating and encouraging each other while sharing lives.

I wonder what kind of people will be at「KOKUBUNJI CAFE」, what kind of conversations they will be having, and what kind of coffee they will be drinking in the future? What kind of stories will they create for themselves as residents here?

The protagonist of that story could very well be you.

I’m gazing over a running river in front of me and facing a lush green knoll. The scene for today’s article is Seiseki-Sakuragaoka in the west of Tokyo. Seiseki-Sakuragaoka is known among Ghibli fans as the location the movie ‘Whisper of the Heart’ was modeled on, and you can catch glimpses of areas featured in the movie everywhere you look. There is a film location map in front of the station and the area is gaining popularity as a place to enjoy walking.

At the end of March the company Rebita, with many large-scale sharehouses underneath it’s belt, has newly opened the 108-room sharehouse ‘SharePlace Seiseki-Sakuragaoka’ in this lushly green commuter town.

The theme of the house is ‘share living amongst the trees’ and the interior comes together with the warmth of its natural design. Inside the space is decorated with plants and trees, recreating the liveliness of nature.

A place that houses 108 residents might not seem to go hand in hand with a relaxed atmosphere, however there is no need to worry as this house has been designed in a way that everyone can enjoy themselves in its mellow environment at their own pace.

Let’s waste no time and have a look at this Spring’s noteworthy large-scale sharehouse in great detail!

Taking care of SharePlace Seiseki-Sakuragaoka is the company Rebita. They handle many large-scale sharehouses converted from company employee dormitories, creating completely new living spaces while respecting the history of the building, and whenever we go to check out one of their new properties we are always surprised to see what they have come up with.

The company often looks to a building’s surroundings as inspiration and incorporates it into its interior. SharePlace Seiseki-Sakuragaoka in particular has a river running languidly in front of the house and an abundance of lush greenery behind it, and as such its interior has a natural design with warm, wooden detailing.

This is a shared lifestyle for 108 people living amongst nature as time passes slowly by.

Enjoy life as you please without any inhibitions. This is the place for you to laugh together with other residents as you understand and support each other, maintaining just the right amount of personal space.

In the confusion of 1950s post-war America, the Golden era began and the phrase ‘The American Dream’ was born. It was also a time that brought great change to the lifestyles and culture of the people.

Today we will show you a place where you can experience the American lifestyle in Japan in a house furnished with antiques based on a 1950s America theme.

The exterior and interior blend seamlessly into the same, unique atmosphere and you may just be able to create a place for yourself here like you could not anywhere else. I get the impression that males in particular won’t be able to pass this one by.

This is the kind of place you would love to live in just once, the kind of place you would boast to your friends and family about. Today we are going to check this unique residence out from top to bottom. Let’s not waste any time and get right into it!

Managing this house is the company Asian Highway. The owner is a very unique, talented individual and ever since opening as a sharehouse the property had been the embodiment of his hobbies and interests. The Asian Highway supervisor of this sharehouse told us that he does not often come across houses with such attention to detail.

Moreover, the private rooms are quite large with plenty of storage space, and as well as being comfortable to live in, the fact that you can move in and start your new life straight away from 20,000-30,000 yen is very attractive indeed.

While it might be fun to shop around and accumulate your own furniture to create the perfect interior from nothing to match your personality, it’s also interesting to add your own flair to an existing room. It wouldn’t have been so easy to create such unique and interesting interiors like the ones here, mind you. It’s almost like taking a display in a showroom and using it as is, which is a big advantage.

Gathering in the living room at the end of the day to enjoy a coffee or wine while conversing with like-minded friends is to live in luxury, and such a place to make your heart beat in hope and anticipation is right here waiting for you.

Kichijoji is a dream come true for people living in the city with its stylish and happening shops, traditional shopping arcades and relaxing parks lush with greenery. Urban House Kichijoji is a sharehouse located close to the charms of this neighborhood. Located in a convenient location 5-minutes walk from Mitakadai station on the Keio Inokashira railway line, a popular route connecting Kichijoji and Shibuya, access to the city is also good.

The great location of the sharehouse is indeed favorable, however the best thing about the house is its interior and facilities. With many of the residents being young men and women, the interior design has been created to imitate a ‘chic cafe’ and stylish touches can be found throughout the house. It would be kind of disappointing to live in a not-so-stylish house in Kichijoji, which is chosen as the top “Neighborhood People Want to Live In” every year.

Living in Urban House Kichijoji you can experience a cafe-like atmosphere everyday surrounded by an interior even those with the most refined tastes would appreciate. You’ll be pleased to know that the house has been designed with safety and security in mind with the entire 3rd floor a female-only zone, and with each room built for one you can maintain your privacy. Let’s get on with the show and have a look inside this house full of charm!

Taking care of the management side of Urban House Kichijoji is Ishin Corporation. In the past they have been involved in apartment management and by chance have embarked on a new venture in the sharehouse industry. That said, rather than being just a business, I felt more of a relaxed, fun vibe of wanting their residents to enjoy themselves when I visited the house myself.

One example of this is that the Ishin Corporation staff took care of the furniture and design of the interior and created the unique space themselves. Taking charge and exploring all ideas one at a time with their very first sharehouse property is not an easy thing to do in the slightest, however I think that looking at things from the resident’s point of view will result in a very comfortable, easy to live in environment.

Even without being aware of the circumstances behind the design of the house I am sure that the variety and color of communication exchanged between housemates will grow to match the environment of the house as they enjoy the fruit of the management team’s hard work. Before too long that environment will also change and the housemates might even form relationships with the management team as they help to create and improve the house in which they are living. Living together and enjoying a house -complete with spacious living room, one’s own room and art adorning the walls everywhere you look- that everyone has helped to create is a wonderful thing indeed.

You love sports, but find that it’s too troublesome to go all the way to a court or field you have to pay fees for. You want to interact with a wide variety of people if you’re going to be making the time to exercise. Going for a run around your neighborhood just isn’t doing it for you, and playing indoor football with the same team members over and over again leaves you dissatisfied.

If this sounds like you, then the Comfort Higashi-Koganei sharehouse is the perfect place to indulge your desires. With sport as the main theme there are many facilities that promote physical activity, and tenants can learn and cultivate themselves by playing sport and interacting with each other in this large-scale sharehouse with the capacity to house 161 people.

A large court on which to enjoy tennis or futsal can be found on the premises, and a fitness studio for a wide variety of uses including dancing or yoga, as well as table tennis and billiard table, have been added inside the house.

With room in the house for 161 tenants you are bound to find a different partner for each and every sport, and as you play hard and sweat it out together the bonds of friendship will surely deepen.

The house is nearby Higashi-Kogenei station on the Chuo line. It’s quite a good location with stylish shopping area ‘nonowa Higashi-Kogenei’ found within the station and Kichijoji 10 minutes away, Shibuya 20 minutes.

This is a sports house for the enjoyment of both young and old, male or female. Let’s get right to it and have a look inside!

Looking after this house is Oak House, professionals in the sharehouse industry who have created a large number of large-scale sharehouses in their history. Properties housing more than 100 people have increased in recent time and there is no doubt many people who doubt the management system of such properties. However, Oak House attaches one house manager to each property and the fact that they are flexible in dealing with things should anything happen is part of this company’s appeal.

These house managers interact peacefully with the tenants and participate in events on and off court.

Once we graduate from school and its afterschool sports club activities, opportunities to get out moving on the court or in the field begin to decrease. We start to feel a bit sentimental as we pass by our old schools and look upon the students trying their best at their chosen sports, remembering the good old days of our own youth.

I once heard the phrase ‘Youth is not a time of life but a state of mind’. There are no age restrictions or student card necessary in order to run around on the court.

It’s not a bad thing at all to run around on the court playing sport without a care in the world. You might even enjoy yourself more than you did when you were younger.

Kurihira is a peaceful residential area atop a small hill. You will become relaxed as you breathe in the fresh air here. If you feel like you’re being swallowed whole by the frantic city lifestyle, just by stepping foot in a place like Kurihira, all of your worries disappear.

Go for a leisurely walk outside and you might just discover sights and sounds that usually go unnoticed. What is strange is that even in such a quiet, peaceful area a plethora of new encounters and discoveries are waiting for you. Too bad we can’t always get away from the city and our workplaces to relax.

The share house we will introduce to you today is near Kurihira station, which is on the Odakyu line and 30 minutes to Shinjuku, 17 minutes to Machida and 4 minutes to Shin-yurigaoka, a location perfect for those working or studying in the city.

This 96-room house is Comfort Machida Kurihira. The house is complete with communal areas such as work-space areas, a soundproof room, a theater room, a studio, and a café lounge. There is also space in the basement to get a massage.

So, without further ado, let’s see what this house has to offer!

This property is in Asao-ku, Kawasaki which is an affluent artistic town. Sure enough, through the paintings hanging on the walls in the house, watching movies and using the instruments you can get a glimpse of the art of the town. Even those who don’t usually take the time to watch movies can pick up a DVD when they are out and about to watch on the large screen in the theater room. You can also play instruments without worrying about making too much noise.

Managing this property is Oak House, and the supervisors spend a lot of time at the house interacting with the tenants. It’s an atmosphere so homey that anyone on the outside looking in wouldn’t even realize that the supervisors are actually staff. I earnestly felt that a lot of great connections are made here with the tenants getting along well with each other, also.

I think the real appeal of share houses is the fact that it fosters new connections among people. It often happens that if you step a little outside of your own community a whole new world lies waiting before you. Large-scale share houses like the one we have introduced to you today are sure to create an abundance of lasting relationships between others.

New encounters and discoveries to be found just 30 minutes from Shinjuku – in line with the new year, how exciting would it be to be starting something new in the Comfort Machida Kurihira share house.

The scenery will slowly but surely become rich with green as you’re gently rocked on the train. The clamor of the city will fade into the distance. Just an 8 minute walk from Toyoda Station, you’ll find Riento Tamadaira, where the townscape seems to gradually blend and become one with nature.

As the summer heat still lingers about, you can sense the coming of fall. Because the nights have grown cooler with the changing of the seasons, the timing was perfect to throw a welcome party for the new residents of Riento Tamadaira, which were fortunately able to attend.

As the sponsor for this event, Rebita, the owners of the share house, prepared a variety of drinks and dishes such as a local cuisine using boiled potatoes. The party was open not only to the residents and share house staff, but also residents from the area, making this the perfect opportunity to make friends while learning about Tamadaira.

So let’s check it out!

Before we get to the party, I’d like to give you a look at the house and it’s rooms.

This house was originally part of a reconstruction project for an apartment complex, which opened in 1958. Once the house was vacant after reconstruction, a private business remodeled the complex even further, breathing new life into it as a share house.

The complex has five buildings in total, with two of them being used for the share house, one being used as a normal residential complex, and two being used as a home catered to the elderly. This complex has managed to leave the beautiful natural landscape in tact while creating a multi-generation community.

Also, to our surprise it seems Riento Tamadaira won the 2012 Good Design award, and will appear in the 2012 Good Design Exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight on November 23 (Friday). If you happen to have time, be sure to check it out.

There’s quite a drastic change in the atmosphere here compared to it’s look in the afternoon. There’s a strong sense of presence setting it apart from the surrounding buildings that’s quite charming.

There are several wooden deck resting areas in the central plaza, and since it’s open to the public, its the perfect spot to relax and socialize.

Now then, tonight’s event will be taking place around this wooden deck. Here they’re setting up the tables and chairs, with all other preparations moving along smoothly.

As preparations continue, people are starting to show up little by little. About 40 people have signed up to attend, so there’s still a long way to go.

Connected to the wooden deck is the main lounge, where decorations have also been hung up for the party. On the far wall is a slide show with pictures taken here at Riento Tamadaira.

More people are starting to show up, and with drinks in hand, it looks like the party has begun. The main event is not until later, so for now it’s great food and great conversation.

This is a scene you definitely won’t find living alone. Together with so many friends under one roof, enjoying a meal with a pleasant evening breeze. One could say this is one of the perks of share house living.

The share house staff are preparing to kick off the main event. It sounds like they put a lot of thought into this one.

To start things off, there was a presentation by the head of the neighborhood council for Tamadaira Ward, explaining the history of the area with the aide of a slide show. It’s one thing to simply move into a town, but to also to learn about it’s history in such a way is definitely a rare opportunity.　I’m sure anyone would feel a new sense of attachment to their home after hearing a presentation like this.

After residents finished introducing themselves, there were introductory speeches from the study abroad students. They tried their best to present in a language they were not yet familiar with, and the residents looked on attentively.

To close out the main event, there was a game designed by the Rebita staff, and the prize was a free ticket to a hot spring in Hachioji. Upon hearing the prize, everyone began clapping and cheering enthusiastically.

Around 50 people took part in the game, but there could be only one winner. As everyone applauded his victory with smiles, I’m sure everyone was wishing they could go to the hot spring as well.

While the party was officially over, not everyone had their fill of drinks and conversation, so a few decided to stay. Unfortunately, this is where we had to take our leave.

So what did you think? Certainly the chance to mingle with so many people of all ages looks appealing. With the inclusion of students who’ve come to study from abroad, there’s also the chance to form friendships that can take you around the world.

Participating in this event, I couldn’t help but be reminded of my time as a student. At the time I was living in the western part of Tokyo, and had I known such a fantastic share house was around, I’m sure I would have moved in.

Although the appeal of multi-unit apartments has been on the decline, it’s surprising how a simple change into a share house can transform one into such an attractive living space. In the city, especially in Tokyo, it’s become increasingly difficult to establish a sense of community with those who live near you. This new style of living, however, is sure to continue growing in popularity as time goes on.

Riento Tamadaira breathes new life into apartment complex style housing, all the while preserving history in amid the greenery of Tamadaira. How would you feel about making a new page in history here, forging friendships with the community?
