Live in touch with the five senses in a town where people from up and coming creators to seasoned artisans gather

When interesting people come together to create amazing things, they draw in more and more people. This is a positive thing, and there so happens to be a passionate area like this in the east of Tokyo.

Today we will be showcasing a female-exclusive sharehouse located here, Isoletta. The 2km area in all directions covering Shin-Okachimachi, Kuramae and Asakusabashi is known as Kachikura, and is becoming the holy ground for arts and crafts in Japan.

A walk-through event called Monomachi for people to experience the charm of the town and it crafts is held periodically. There is upwards of 200 participating vendors including cafes in old buildings and warehouses, as well as small stalls set up by arts and crafts business, craftsmen and original creators. Setting up your own stall is quite intimidating. As a resident of Isoletta you could collaborate with other housemates and share a stall together.

Located in such a vibrant neighborhood and only a 1-minute walk from Shin-Okachimachi station, Isoletta is one house where any working woman would love to live.

Near the station are Japan’s second oldest shopping areas, Satake Shopping Arcade and Okasu Alley. Walking around checking out the stores would be a great way to spend your off days.

Spend free and easy days in the spacious communal area designed with a blending of Japanese and Western styles

Enter and you’ll find the living room and kitchen. This creates an environment for residents to meet face to face and words of greeting to be exchanged naturally.

When you’re in the living room with this vibrant red sofa you’ll feel happy and joyful.

Lovely ornaments can be found here and there throughout the house.

Spacious dining area

Imagine the fun you could have with 8 girls gathered around the dining table sharing a meal together.

The kitchen. Everything you could need is at your fingertips, including tableware and kitchen appliances.

There are personal storage spaces for each resident, meaning you have enough room to buy and try out a variety of different sauces and spices.

The stove has gas burners with great heating power.

There is also a microwave for those busy days when you want to prepare your meal with little fuss. It also has steaming capabilities.

There’s a washstand right by the entrance, perfect for checking your personal appearance one last time before you step out the door in the morning.

There is a toilet on each floor.

This is Room 302. The natural light coming in through the large window and its paper sliding screen is exceptional. With plenty of storage space you’ll have little to worry about living here.

Room 403 on the 4F has a cozy atmosphere.

Room 501 on the 5F comes with a bed and desk provided.

A stylish Japanese-taste ornament at the top of the stairs. No matter how busy your weekdays are, you can always relax and enjoy a beer on the rooftop gazing at the Tokyo Sky Tree at night. A tiled sign welcomes residents and visitors to the house.

This house is administered by the company Yadoya. The owner himself has an interest in creating sharehouses and is there to support you in your new city lifestyle. When I spoke with him for this article it really came across how important he values the relationships with his tenants, as he is managing the whole operation himself.

Yadoya takes care of its residents by hosting all kinds of events, such as plum wine making, cooking days and cleaning with aromatherapy, and the eight residents here, whoever they may be, will most surely achieve relaxed, peace of mind living in the city.

The company also values connections with the locals of Shin-Okachimachi, and living here you may make a local acquaintance or two.

Brilliant men and women, both young and old, gather in this lively arts and crafts neighborhood with its long-loved shopping arcade and Ueno park and Asakusa temple around the corner. You too will surely be met with new and exciting encounters here.

This artsy neighborhood brings people together, and there’s nothing more wonderful than that.

Communication starts in the Kitchen: Mercato Shin-okachimachi

A spacious kitchen and dining area resembling an Italian marketplace.

Mercato means marketplace in Italian. It is also used to express the transfer of players in European soccer in summer and winter. There is one other beautiful hidden meaning in this word, and that is ‘a place where people come and go through life.’

Sharehouses are exactly that, places where people come and go through life, and just as I was thinking so I came across the property I will show you today.

Mercato Shin-Okachimachi is a female-only sharehouse opened this past summer, about a 2-minute walk from Shin-Okachimachi station on the Toei Oedo line and within walking distance to Okachimachi station on the JR Yamanote line. With Asakusa and Ueno 10-minutes by bicycle you can also enjoy sightseeing spots within the city.

With the 4m long kitchen and 3m high ceiling reminiscent of an Italian marketplace it is possible to interact with your housemates at the dining table through food and cooking. Today I will be showing you around the rich variety of private rooms and wide, spacious communal areas of the house.

So, without further ado, let’s head on into the house!!

A most cheerful entrance with a white color-scheme bathed in light

Inside head left to the living room or up the stairs on the right to the floor with the rooms. With the living room and private rooms divided like this there’s no need to be worried about noise.

House plants have been placed in the entrance, and a little bit of green in the house will spice up your life ever so slightly.

The bicycle parking area. There is no need to worry about your bike being stolen with a gate in place.

Large-scale living and dining area boasts 38㎡ of space and a 3m high ceiling

As you can see, the spaciousness of the area stands out as soon as you set foot in the living room. A table and chairs have been arranged in the middle of the room as if encouraging you to enjoy food and cooking.

Shelving stretching up to the ceiling has been fitted on both sides. The symmetricalness of it all may be quite novel to you!?

Turn around from the dining room to find the living area. The thin television suspended from the ceiling adds to the unusual interior.

An exposed ventilation system hangs down from the ceiling in the kitchen. The chairs had a splash of color to the room. There is space down below in the kitchen to store dinnerware and cooking utensils. The dining table is a tiled design.
The blackboard painted onto one wall in the dining area can act as a platform to share recipes as well as a message board for the tenants. Tableware is stored in these wine crates. This is how they are supposed to be used but with such a simple design you can use them for anything.
Shelves are lined with everything from rice cookers to a microwave oven, and a bread maker to bake your own bread in. Let’s move onto the living area. The bare room, furnished with only a sofa and coffee table, is somewhat stylish to the eye. The sofa is quite an interesting shape with its beautiful, curved design.
Now let’s look at the kitchen, laundry and toilet facilities. In the kitchen two sinks have been arranged facing each other. The toilet and laundry room. The dressing room and bathroom. There’s also a shower as well as a bathroom with a tub.

All rooms are rich in variety and come with a unique chair

Rooms are all one size and come with a bed, storage space and a chair in each. The design and layout of the rooms are different, so it might be an idea to come on over and check them out yourself!

Room 204 has a large window and simple layout to use as you please. There is also quite a lot of storage space. The 2F. Washstands are fitted outside the rooms. Next is Room 303, located up one floor. This type of room has a bookcase for storing your things neatly in sections.
You are greeted a sorrowful bird ornament on the 4F floor. Rom 402. The Japanese-style cabinet in a Western-style room adds an accent to the space. You can exit out onto the balcony from the 4F rooms. You might want to hang your clothes to dry out here.

Managing this sharehouse is R Bank, a company that takes care of over 20 other properties, mainly female-exclusive houses and they conscientiously create houses one after the other with a variety of concepts and themes in mind. It is because of this that I headed to this shoot from the station in great anticipation of what kind of house they had thought up this time.

Okachimachi, the location this house is in, flourished as a craftsman’s neighborhood in the Edo period long ago and has recently seen some popularity known as Kachikura, with stores featuring the younger generation’s handmade goods opening one after the other. There are many opportunities to explore the variety of items, works of art and ideas while browsing the streets for those of you interested in the creations of young designers and artists.

This is a place where people come and go through their lives, and a place to share things with each other. Magic happens when people gather, and a new culture and lifestyle has come to be amidst such a historical area. I can’t help but feel that the opportunity to transform a house into such a home by its tenants lies hidden here at Mercado Shin-Okachimachi.

An extravagant share life with glimmering chandeliers: Classico Shin-Okachimachi

Today we took a visit to Classico Shin-Okachimachi, a share house that’s recently opened after renovating a large stately mansion featuring an elevator, chandeliers, and even a piano.

This large scale share house with 39 rooms is a 4 story structure featuring a 40 tatami atrium-style living room and a rooftop deck, with floors for men, women, and a coed floor as well. What we found interesting was that each room has a different arrangement, so you can enjoy picking which room you’d like to live in. We’re sure you’ll enjoy paying a visit to take a look at the rooms.

Only 10 minutes away from 4 stations and 5 train lines, this is an extremely convenient place for those working in the metropolitan area located within walking distance of Akihabara and Ueno, so for all you students, working adults, and even Foreigner visitors, be sure to have a look!

Atrium-style living room brimming with a sense of openness

The living room located in the center of the building is a spacious 40 tatamis (66m²), lit by gorgeous chandeliers and includes a balcony. Relaxing on the couch gathered together with other residents, or inviting friends over to enjoy meal or to throw a party, one can imagine a share house life with a touch of elegance.

Here’s a look at the outside。It has an atmosphere reminiscent of a stylish bar. At the entrance is the Classico signboard. Going up the elevator, you’ll finally arrive at the central living room.
Looking up you’ll see the extravagant chandelier. A shot from the top of the stairs. Next is the entrance hall.
Here’s a shot of the kitchens. There are stand-alone kitchens on separate floors with three in total. Apart from being able to cook meals at your own leisure, because this is a large-scale share house, there will be various people living here, sometimes wanting to be by themselves or perhaps change their mood. With that in mind, we believe if you’re living here it’s invaluable to have several shared spaces on different floors. With one of them located adjacent to the living room, it gives the feeling there will be more parties being held in the future.

As expected from a house previously owned by a wealthy person, the elegance of the atrium-style living room with its chandelier and piano is only natural. However, with its adjacent balcony, elevator, and 3 stand-alone kitchens, we believe you’ll be able to spend your days living here with more leeway than you could living alone.

　With its great location and reasonable pricing, although this share house has just opened, there are already quite a few inquiries and people who have decided to move in. For those of you who have interest, be sure to hurry while there’s still room.

Also when we visited, a party was being held for residents as well as those who have decided to move in. The owner treated everyone to home cooked food, and the staff was very courteous. Seeing the residents immediately hitting it off and deepening exchanges, we got the impression of a fun “share house life” being here.

Relaxing in a Japanese-style living room: Style House Yanaka Ⅱ

Blue Star Partners is a company with top notch service so great that they are even considering offering presents such as hotel beauty salon vouchers both in Japan and overseas to express their thanks to long-staying tenants, something rare in the real estate world. They renovated and opened a new share house, Style House YanakaⅡ in November, 2011, and as with their previous properties, offers rooms for a relatively low cost furnished with all that you could possibly need in your shared living lifestyle.

　The aim of the house is for tenants to be able to relax as well as maintain good communication with the other housemates. The living room conforms to a classic Japanese design in which everyone can huddle around the ‘kotatsu’ (table emitting heating from beneath) in winter and with the island kitchen and fresh, white color-scheme, it’s a pretty good environment. A 4-minute walk from Sendagi station on the Chiyoda line and 3 minutes to the famous Yanaka Ginza shopping street, it’s a great share house for exchange students and students moving from the country for school. Oh, and I should mention that it is a female exclusive share house! Alright then, on to Style House YanakaⅡ!

The completely renovated, 6-room female exclusive house is a 4-minute walk from Sendagi station and sits in a quiet residential area. There is also a shopping district nearby so there won’t be any inconveniences to your daily life./p>

Living

A Japanese-style communal space. Those who love tatami mats and a kotatsu to help them relax should definitely come on over. Just by being in this room your mood will lighten and you can enjoy your days with the the other housemates.


Let’s start with the exterior. This fully renovated home is now a share house. There are mailboxes for everyone at the entrance. Next up, the entrance.
The front hallway. The storage boxes are for shoes. The hallway. The house interior is unified by a white color-scheme. Let’s have a look at the 1F. Turning from the hallway, we find a sink, washing machine and dryer.
The washing machine and dryer take coins to operate. I liked the lighting in the hallway so I snapped this shot. Storage drawers.
The shower. The toilet, perfect and clean as a new house should be. While we’re at it, here’s a shot of the toilet paper.
Let’s head on upstairs. You will be greeted by an island kitchen. The kitchen from a different angle.
The all-electric island kitchen is in the center, with plenty of space to cook. Even the rubbish bins match with the house’s interior. Everything you could need is provided, including glasses and tableware.
Plenty of storage space for 6 people to use. With each box able to store quite a large amount you won’t have any problems finding a place for your sauces, condiments and foodstuffs. A different angle. A house with such a large kitchen can really increase the opportunities for tenants to come in contact with each other.
Next let’s pop by the living room, which is beside the kitchen. With it’s Japanese-style design it is in dramatic contrast to that of the kitchen. On the right there are two chairs that can be divided off by sliding doors. By the window it’s a great to have long conversations.
The main points are the tatami mats and kotatsu and the difference in materials feels nice to the touch. The shape of the table is slightly curved and gives it a refined touch. There is a Japanese-style closet across from the window. I was told that the original building was used as much as possible in order to keep costs low.
The ceiling. I thought to myself that a Japanese-style design really soothes the soul and got up closer to take this shot.


Let’s move on to the rooms, starting from Room 101. Each room of course has its own lock and key. Furnished with a bed as well as a chair and air conditioner, the room also comes with lace curtains and a blanket so you really only need to bring one bag when moving in. This is the biggest room, coming in at 11.2㎡. The flooring.
There is also a small table. Moving onto Room 102… The hanging rack.
Here we have Room 103. The layout is a tad different with a wall separating the bed and the chair. There is also a small table in the back.
Room 104. Room 201 on the 2F. This is the smallest room with 7.9㎡ of space. The view from the opposite site.
And last but not least, Room 202. This room is right next to the kitchen on the 2F but the walls are soundproof. A red table in a white-color schemed room really stands out.

Blue Star Partners provides nice and clean places to live on par with normal rental properties, as expected from a company who looks at things from the tenant’s point of view and understands that it is even more important to protect one’s private life when living in a share house. The cost is kept low and the house comes with everything you could possibly need (to the degree that I personally wonder why everyone isn’t living in share houses, but anyway!) which means that you can start your new life without any initial fees. So, for those of you looking to live in Taito-ku, or those looking to change up their life a bit, how about Style House YanakaⅡ?

Style House YanakaⅡ is a 3-minute walk from Yanaka Ginza shopping street. It may be close by, but it is also a place where you can get a feel for traditional Japan and remains a recommended sightseeing area even to this day. Walk up towards the north end to Yuyake Dandan (Sunset Steps) to see a most beautiful sunset. Quiet and calm days are waiting for you at Style House YanakaⅡ with its Japanese-style living room, and you are sure to enjoy your life here indulging in the character of the local area.

The staff told me that as current real estate structure and and customs make it difficult for those living away from Tokyo to move here, their objective is to support those people by providing them with a place to live. When you think about it, when looking for a job in Tokyo living in a share house is much more beneficial to your search efforts that staying in a hotel, with the ability to exchange information with tenants and talk to others who are working full time about the realities of having a job.

　Nevertheless, by reading this article and hearing what the staff have had to say, I’m sure there are many people out there hoping that they can become useful members of society, and we are feeling charged up about this, too.
